First Graduate of MCPS Youth Apprenticeship Program Hired as Full-Time Leasing Consultant

Chris Cabrera graduated high school in May 2024

Silver Spring, MD – Donaldson is proud to welcome its first graduate from the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Youth Apprenticeship Program, Chris Cabrera, as a full-time Leasing Consultant at Montgomery White Oak in Silver Spring. Cabrera began his apprenticeship with Donaldson in September 2023 during his senior year at Springbrook High School where he is now a recent graduate.

Donaldson partners with MCPS to create opportunities for high school students through the Youth Apprenticeship Program, facilitated by the Department of College & Career Readiness & Districtwide Programs. The program aims to connect students and employers, fostering skilled professionals through education, mentorship, and on-the-job training.

Donaldson’s collaboration with MCPS offers students from diverse backgrounds the flexibility to work part time while gaining valuable skills and experience. This partnership benefits Donaldson by developing a pipeline of talented, highly skilled workers to support the company’s growth and excellence in property management.

Chris Cabrera is Donaldson’s first graduate from the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Youth Apprenticeship Program.

“Donaldson is excited about investing in our community, especially in our young professionals who may not decide to go straight into a four-year university setting,” commented Jeanette Stahli, Senior Vice President of HR at Donaldson. “This partnership has already proven to be rewarding and effective, particularly as the first in our industry to partner with MCPS in the Youth Apprenticeship Program.”

During his apprenticeship, Cabrera learned to provide exceptional customer service and assist prospective residents with finding new homes. He is enthusiastic about starting his career in property management with Donaldson. Reflecting on his apprenticeship, Cabrera said, “Working here has been a wonderful experience and has made me realize that knowledge is only gained by experience.”

Montgomery White Oak Property Manager Kenny Castellanos said Cabrera holds a special place in her heart. Castellanos commented, “Chris is a very smart student and employee—he focuses on the task given to him until its completion. Having Chris work at Montgomery White Oak is a pleasure, and his energy is felt within the office. It is a pleasure to have him as part of our team. I see a bright future in anything Chris decides to pursue.”

With the MCPS Youth Apprenticeship Program model, students work a minimum of 450 hours within a specified period (not to exceed 14 months) while receiving related educational training and certifications dependent on the industry.
